"Going to see a solo exhibition and meeting the artist was a big turning point for me. I wondered if it would be possible to do what I love as a job."

Kaori Higashi has always loved ceramic art. When she went to a solo exhibition, an artist told her, "If you like it, why don't you try making it yourself?" This prompted her to pursue ceramics.

After training at Kazuo Yamaji's pottery studio for about two years, she studied molding and glazing at the Ibaraki Prefecture Ceramics Training Center and studied under Koji Baba. In 2008, she became independent in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. After giving birth, Azuma took a break from creating pottery for a while, but wanted to show her work to a wider audience, so she began submitting her work to public exhibitions. Azuma has won numerous awards for her soft, gentle-textured works with a shell motif, and in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, she has begun producing kaori, a line of simple tableware for enjoying the time spent at home.

"My concept is to create simple, easy-to-use tableware so that you can enjoy your daily meals. Specifically, I want things that don't get in the way of the food and that are light to hold. I also add my favorite ingredients like chicken, mushrooms, and pears to add a little essence," says Kaori.

You will be drawn to the adorable mushrooms and birds. You will feel the same excitement as if you came across them by chance on a quiet lake or in a forest. Just looking at them will bring a smile to your face.

"I like soft forms and lines, so I draw based on my own sense. I sometimes look at illustrated books to find plants and creatures that I'm attracted to."
