The works of Kokeiro Kobo feature animals and plants drawn freely, like something out of a picture book. A delightful world, as if about to spring to life, fills each piece.
Ryoma Tanaka, who creates under the name Kokeiro Kobo, encountered pottery at a university ceramics club in 2004 and has since gradually built his own artistic world. The name "Kokeiro Kobo" (moss color workshop) comes from his love for moss and moss bonsai.
All the patterns are drawn freehand. Each individual part has a different expression, and the subtle variations and warmth that only handmade work can create become the unique character of each piece.
The technique used is "kakioroshi," which has been passed down for generations. He actually arrived at this technique through self-study without even knowing its name, and through trial and error, he cultivated it into his own unique form of expression. The lines created by drawing and then carving out the design have a depth that evokes a sense of narrative.
For his creations, he uses Mashiko clay, which he settled on after trying various types of earth. He skillfully uses white clay, black clay, and blended clays according to the image he envisions, creating a gentle and profound texture. Though simple and warm in appearance, the pieces are surprisingly light when held. The comfort of being able to use them casually in daily meals is also a great appeal.
