Shodai ware (Kumamoto)

Shodai-yaki is a pottery that has been around for about 400 years at the foot of Mt. Kodai in Kumamoto Prefecture. By using Ojiro soil, which contains a lot of iron and pebbles, it is possible to bake at the high temperature of porcelain. By dynamically pouring or double-coating the straw ash glaze, which is made in the old-fashioned way, it is characterized by its deep beauty and simplicity. Currently, there are 11 potteries around Arao City, and they are striving to create new works every day while passing on the techniques.
