Small things that enrich our lives - Sayaka Kanazu -

Sayaka Kanazu, a glass artist from Toyama, creates works that tug at the heartstrings, evoking the same kind of emotion you feel when you see beautiful nature, followed by a lingering feeling. We spoke to Kanazu, whose work is being carried in our shop for the first time, about glass and other topics!

"The reason I started making glass dates back a long time ago. When I was in elementary school, I saw glass blowing in Otaru, and it left a strong impression on me. It was a mysterious sight to see a gooey orange substance being turned into glass. From there, I started collecting small glass dolls and marbles, and I have always loved glass because it shines as it collects light despite its small size. I secretly knew in my heart that when I grew up, I would make something out of glass."

However, as she grew up, decided to go to college to become an art teacher, and started attending a glassblowing class in Osaka, where he was living at the time. He was drawn to the charm of glass and continues to create glass to this day.

"What I like about glass is that when combined with light, it creates a synergistic effect through refraction and light accumulation," says Ms. Kanazu.

The images in her works are similar to the images she has saved in her mind, such as the scenery she sees while traveling or when she goes for a walk or shopping. She brings these images out and uses them as motifs for her works.

When it comes to plants, I first carefully observe them and draw a picture before creating them.

The patterns are carved into the glass using a sandblaster (a machine that blows sand at high pressure) and then colored with glass paint. The three-dimensional, intricate patterns and colors are truly beautiful!

The round glass engravings are made by first forming the shape using the glass blowing technique, then carving the round shape using the cut glass technique. It also acts as a non-slip surface when held, and the changing appearance like a lens adds to the interest.

"I believe that even small things can be a catalyst for enriching our lives. I create my items with the hope that they can spice up our daily lives. I would be delighted if someday they become antiques with their own stories."

These are things that shine brightly and will be part of the lives of many people. Just thinking about how many wonderful things you will continue to create makes me excited. I look forward to seeing more wonderful works in the future!
