Expressive ceramics that evoke warmth
Because these are items used every day, they feature a simple, timeless design with a sense of warmth. Each piece is carefully handcrafted in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, with thoughtful attention to comfort and ease of use, resulting in ceramics that gently fit into the lives of those who use them.

"Kohiki" is a technique where white slip (clay thinned with water, distinct from glaze) is applied over brown clay before firing. By applying white slip over a custom-blended red clay from Shigaraki—which is rich in iron—and firing it twice, a soft and gentle white texture is achieved. The appeal of Kohiki lies in its unique expression, which is simple yet exudes a refined elegance.

The faint pink spots are a kiln-change effect known as "Gohonde." The black dots that appear here and there, called "Tetsusan," are created by the iron within the clay surfacing during the firing process. Both are naturally occurring expressions that, along with the unique firing colors and varying thickness of the slip, allow you to enjoy the distinctive charm of handmade work. The gentle white enhances the colors of your food, harmonizing beautifully with all types of cuisine—both Japanese and Western—and with other tableware.

Simply serving your usual dishes on Furutani Pottery’s ceramics creates a comforting and pleasant dining table. These pieces make you want to cherish not just special occasions, but your simple everyday meals as well. They are pieces that gently snuggle up to your daily life.

| Recommended Care Instructions and Precautions from Furutani Pottery |
|
〇 Before first use, wash lightly with detergent and use as is. 〇 When serving oily or dark-colored foods, lightly run the piece under water so it absorbs moisture; this helps prevent stains. 〇 Because these items are absorbent, they may temporarily discolor to grey or develop spots when soaked in water, but please rest assured they will return to their original state once fully dry. 〇 After use, please dry thoroughly before storing to prevent mold and staining. |
| Understanding our "Ceramics" |
|
〇 Because each piece is handmade, there will be individual differences in color, shape, patterns, size, thickness, weight, etc. Also, even with the same glaze and clay, uneven coloring and variations in shade will occur. 〇 Hand-painted designs may also vary in expression from piece to piece. 〇 Depending on the manufacturing process, some products may show small holes, tiny black spots, surface scratches, protrusions, pinholes, wobbling, or slight distortion. 〇 While we process our product images to be as close to the real thing as possible, the colors and textures may appear different depending on your computer or smartphone display screen. 〇 We deliver products that have passed not only the inspections of the manufacturer, kiln, or artisan, but also our own final inspection. 〇 Product photos are samples; the item you receive will not be identical in every detail. 〇 We do not accept returns or exchanges based on customer preference. Please understand and agree to this before purchasing. 〇 We hope you will enjoy the "taste" and "charm" unique to handmade items that cannot be found in mass-produced factory goods! |
