Warm and expressive ceramics
Because they are items used daily, we focus on designs that are warm and simple, ensuring you never tire of them. Each piece is carefully handcrafted in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, with thoughtful attention to ease of handling and comfort, creating pottery that gently accompanies the user's daily life.

"Kohiki" is a technique where white slip (a liquid clay used to create a white finish, distinct from glaze) is applied over brown clay before firing. By applying white slip to a specially formulated red clay from Shigaraki that is rich in iron and firing it twice, a soft and gentle white texture is achieved. The charm lies in the unique expression of Kohiki, which feels rustic yet somewhat elegant at the same time.

The faint pink spots are a kiln-change effect known as "Gohonde." The black dots that appear here and there, called "Tetsusan" (iron sprinkle), are caused by the iron content in the clay during firing. Both are natural expressions, and along with individual variations in firing color and slip coverage, you can enjoy the unique character that only handmade items possess. The gentle white enhances the color of your food, harmonizing with both Japanese and Western cuisine, as well as with other tableware.

Even everyday meals become comforting and pleasant when served on pottery from Furutani Pottery. It’s the kind of tableware that makes you want to cherish not just special occasions, but your casual, everyday meals as well. It is pottery that quietly nestles into your daily life.

|
〇 Before first use, please wash lightly with detergent and use as is. 〇 When serving oily foods or dishes with strong colors, rinsing the piece with water first to dampen it will help prevent stains. 〇 Due to its absorbency, it may turn gray or develop spots when soaked in water, but it will return to its original state once completely dry, so please rest assured. 〇 After use, please dry thoroughly before storing to prevent mold and stains. |
| Understanding our "Utuwa" (Pottery) |
|
〇 Because each piece is handmade, individual differences occur in color, shape, pattern, size, thickness, and weight. Additionally, the same glaze or clay may yield color variations and shading. 〇 As hand-painted designs are applied individually, expressions may vary. 〇 Depending on the manufacturing process, some items may exhibit small holes, tiny black spots, surface scratches, protrusions, pinholes, wobbling, or warping. 〇 While product images are processed to be as close to the actual color as possible, the color and texture may appear different depending on your computer or smartphone display. 〇 We deliver products that have cleared not only the inspection of the manufacturer/potter but also our own final inspection. 〇 Since product photos are taken using samples, every item you receive will be unique in its fine details. 〇 We do not accept returns or exchanges due to customer preference. We appreciate your understanding and consent before purchasing. 〇 We hope you enjoy the "charm" and "interest" unique to handmade items that mass-produced factory goods lack! |
