| Hasami ware is a type of ceramic ware made in Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture. Hasami ware is not made by a single craftsman, but rather by a division of labor. Each step is carried out by a professional: someone who makes the plaster mold that serves as the base for the vessel, someone who makes the dough based on that mold, a kiln manufacturer who bakes the dough, and a trading company who handles distribution. Hasami ware has a history of over 400 years, but until around 2002 it was treated as Arita ware. In 2002, a problem of false origins led to calls for stricter origin labeling, and Hasami ware began to be distributed under the name Hasami ware, which led to successful branding. Nowadays it is widely loved as a modern and stylish vessel for everyday use. |
