Reason for being called the best folk pottery in the world
A traditional pottery that has a history of about 300 years and was designated as an important intangible cultural property of Japan in 1995 in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. Currently, there are only 9 potteries. Traditional techniques that are handed down from parent to child create one-of-a-kind “Utsuwa”.
The sound of the turret echoing through the mountain village
Karausu is a mortar that crushes pottery clay using the flow of rivers without the use of machinery. The melody of the karusu resounding in the mountains will make you feel comfortable. Ontayaki is all handmade, including the making of the soil and the making of the glaze. Because they are all handmade, each one has its own unique beauty and depth of flavor, which will fascinate you.
Interesting flying plane
"Kanna" is a traditional technique in which patterns are applied to the surface of the vessel by turning the potter's wheel with the tip of the plane. The beauty of the rhythmically carved patterns will captivate you.
soothing amber color
A deep amber color that gives you a warm feeling. Ontayaki has a unique presence that complements the dishes you serve. It is a vessel that suits simmered dishes, stir-fried dishes, salads, and pasta and curry as a one-plate dish.
Because each item is handmade, there are individual differences such as color, shape, size, weight, glaze unevenness, glaze pools, and subtle differences in patterns. In addition, there may be differences in the degree of glaze, faintness, pinholes, and iron powder (black spots), but there is no problem with use. Please enjoy it as a unique expression unique to handmade. You can't choose which item you receive, but we hope you'll look forward to it until it arrives. If you are interested, please contact us before shipping and we will email you a separate photo, so please feel free to contact us.

Ontayaki Ontayaki |
Ontayaki is a type of pottery produced in the Ontasarayama area (Genei-cho Sarayama), a mountainous village in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. The kiln was opened in 1705 by Sanuemon Yanase, a potter invited from Koishiwara, Fukuoka Prefecture. In 1931, Mr. Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the Mingei movement, visited Onta and saw the value of folk pottery in the fact that traditional techniques had been passed down. Mr. Bernard Leach, a potter, also received high praise, and Ontayaki became widely known. In 1995, it was certified as a national important intangible cultural asset preservation group, and in 2008, it was selected as a national important cultural landscape under the name of Ontayaki no Sato. The traditional techniques of Ontayaki include “Tobikanna”, “Hakeme”, “Finger painting”, “Comb painting”, “Uchikake” and “Nagashikake”. Today, there are nine potteries, and even after more than 300 years, the traditional techniques have been passed down from generation to generation. |
Understanding of "Utsuwa" |
〇Because each product is handmade, there may be individual differences in color, shape, pattern, size, thickness, weight, etc. Also, even with the same glaze and clay, uneven colors and shading will appear. 〇Because the painting is also hand-painted one by one, the expression may differ. 〇 Depending on the product, there may be small holes, small black dots, line scratches, protrusions, pinholes, rattling, or distortion due to the manufacturing process. 〇 We have processed the image of the product so that the color is as close to the real thing as possible, but the color and texture may look different depending on the display screen of your computer or smartphone. 〇In our shop, we not only inspect the manufacturer, pottery, and artist, but also deliver products that have passed the final inspection at our store. 〇 Product photos are sample shots, so the items you receive will not be the same in detail. 〇 We do not accept returns or exchanges due to customer's convenience. Please purchase after understanding and acknowledging this. 〇 We would be happy if you could enjoy the “taste” and “interest” of handmade products that are not found in factory mass-produced products! |
